Classic Boba Milk Tea

Black Pearl Bubble Milk Tea

You've heard about it, I mean everyone has, right? The Popular Taiwanese Iced Drink that has taken everyone away with its tea-based flavors and foamy layers. The best part of this drink isn't the drink itself but the "chewy Tapioca Pearls" which are mixed in along with the iced tea, and are sucked out with a giant straw. It's no other than the Classic Boba Tea!

This drink was invented in Taiwan around the 1940s. Called zhen zhu nai cha in Mandarin, it translates to pearl milk tea, getting it's name from the tapioca pearls. The Boba in the tea refers to the black Tapocia pearls, since there can be many different colors and flavors of tapioca as well.  Boba Tea is usually shaken to create the foamy layers on top, which is what we will be teaching you.

This drink can be flavored with any number of additional powders or infusions, mango, lychee , even honeydew. It can be customized to your liking. This recipe teaches you my favorite flavor - the simple and classic Milk Tea, which is sweetened!

Before you get started:  Note that this recipe requires, store-bought tapioca pearls.( we used the black ones for this recipe, but anything color is fine)
This recipe is split into 3 categories to better help prepare the ingredients and cooking. The first 2 parts teach how to cook the tapioca pearls.

Part 1: Making the Sugar Syrup ( for Tapioca Pearls) :
  • 3 parts of water ( can be measured in oz, ml, or cup depending on amount of drink)
  • 2 parts white sugar
  • 1 part brown sugar
Method:
  1. First, gather your ingredients
  2. In a large pot/saucepan, bring the water to a boil and then add both sugars to the water
  3.  Simmer the syrup till the sugar crystals have dissolved

  4. Afterwards, drain the pearls and submerge them in cold water to cool
  5. Finally, add them to your prepared Sugar Syrup, and make sure the pearls are covered, by stirring well
